Friday 12th April 2024 is the 96th anniversary of the first successful transatlantic flight from east to west. Amongst the crew of three on the Bremen flight was Portlaoise man Colonel James Fitzmaurice.

The anniversary will be marked today by the Colonel James Fitzmaurice Commemorative Society in co-operation with the Irish Air Corps and Laois County Council with a wreath laying ceremony at Fitzmaurice Place, Portlaoise at noon. The event will be followed by refreshments in Kavanagh’s Bar, Main Street.
