Laois Heritage Society’s monthly talk for November is Memory & History: the Great Famine in Ballyfin by historian Terry Dunne. This lecture is based on new research funded by the Heritage through Art Grant supported by Creative Laois, Laois Heritage Office and Laois Heritage Society.
As part of this project Terry Dunne researched, recorded and preserved the history of the Famine Mortuary at Ballylusk, Ballyfin. The Famine Mortuary at Ballylusk is an intriguing little stone building, little in its dimensions but huge in terms of historical significance. Possibly there are no other surviving Famine mortuaries in the country.
Terry has worked as Laois Historian-in-Residence for several years. He produces scholarly work which is both strongly theoretically/comparatively informed and empirically grounded. Much of his output is available on this website in the form of local history articles and podcasts.
The talk will take place in the Midlands Park Hotel on Thursday 28th November at 8pm. Free for members to attend and €5 for non members. Membership available on the evening.
