Portlaoise Library
Saturday 22nd March 2025, 11am
The first Local Studies coffee morning of 2025 will take place on Saturday, 22nd March at 11am in the Community Room in Portlaoise Library.
To encourage and foster local interest in the history and heritage of Laois, Portlaoise Library regularly hosts Local Studies coffee mornings. If you have an interest in Laois history, or would like to learn more about the county, then come along and meet like-minded adults of all ages to listen and share local stories of the past, ancient and recent.
The short talk at Saturday’s gathering will be on Earl Grey Scheme, an assisted emigration scheme that shipped over 4,000 Irish orphan girls from the workhouses of Ireland to Australia between 1848 and 1850. A free one day seminar on this topic is being held on Saturday 24th May in Mountmellick Museum. For more details and to book a place click HERE
