Remembering Our WWI War Dead

Laois Local Studies > Uncategorised > Remembering Our WWI War Dead

Tom Burnell will talk on his Irish Great War Dead Archive, a searchable database of servicemen with connections to Ireland who died in the Great War, 1914-1918.

Tom Burnell is a military historian and author of ‘The War Dead’ series and ‘Irishmen of the Great War.’ He has spent over twenty years researching this topic.

Examining contemporary newspapers, books, historical records and Ireland’s Memorial Records, Tom has compiled an exhaustive list of servicemen who died during the Great War or as a result of injuries received. The Archive has expanded on the list of entries recorded in Ireland’s Memorial Records and where identified gives added detail about family connections, residence, etc.

The Archive is of great interest to military historians and genealogists and is available to search on this LINK courtesy of Tipperary Library Service. Tom has generously provided Laois Local Studies with a copy of the Laois fatalities list to make available in the Local Studies reading room and online.

This talk takes place in Portlaoise Library on Wednesday 30th July at 7pm. Book your place on the Portlaoise Library booking page or email localstudies@laoiscoco.ie
