Abbey Leix House c. 1950s

The extensive De Vesci papers[i] in the National Library of Ireland are a valuable resource for local history in Laois and surrounding counties. An interesting item in this collection is a list of people who purchased Indian meal from the De Vesci Estate in July 1801. The background is that Irish food prices had risen dramatically due to poor harvests in 1799 to 1801 [ii]. The reduced production was aggravated by demand for food for the British Army, which was then at war with France. This resulted in mob protests in several places. To relieve the resulting distress, export of foodstuffs was banned, and duties on imported meal and flour were waived. Corn or Maize meal (also known as Indian meal or Yellow meal) was imported in large quantities from America, and was used as a substitute for wheat flour. The strategy was effective and Indian meal became widely available. It would appear that the De Vesci estate became a local distributor of this foodstuff.

A calendar of the De Vesci papers held in the National Library of Ireland, published by the Irish Manscript Commission, is available to consult in Laois Local Studies and Abbeyleix Library. The descriptive list for the collection can also be viewed on the NLI website on this LINK
This list of 213 purchasers of meal is from a De Vesci account book[i]. It shows the amount of Indian meal purchased per person, and the amount paid. A stone of meal cost 2 shillings, and most purchases were from 1 to 3 stone. Although addresses are generally not given, the people listed are likely to have been residents of the Civil Parish of Abbeyleix. The population of this parish at the time was around 4,100 people or about 710 families. Based on other research in these papers, many are workers on the estate. Almost half of the purchasers are women, including 16 widows.
Rarer family names within the list include Haycock, Batterer, Oxbergh, Keravan, Vousdill and Larresy. Among the locally common names are Fitzpatrick, Bergin, Delany, Dooly, Phelan, Lalor (or Lawlor), Tierney and Tynan. Some common abbreviations of first names are used, such as Jno. = John; Jas. = James; Edwd. = Edward; Thos. = Thomas; Patt = Patrick; Wm. = William; Richd. = Richard. Bartle is a short name for Bartholomew.
